The Family Authority between Crisis and Conflict

Authority is the warranty of the forbidden. When he faces authority, the child constructs a game in which disobedience interrogates and appraises each generation’s position. The identification with the adults does not rely on tenderness only but follows a confrontational process depending on the framework of society. The latter must allow the family to initiate a “fondamental conflict” with the child as soon as he is on what Freud called his “anal stage”. This process is the identification to the parental superego and turns authority into an essential way of transmission. Therefore the child learns through this process the cultural norms and codes as well as, or maybe most of all, to give himself a psychic countenance.
