Victimization Surveys in Schools: Critical Lessons and New Methodology

The gross inadequacy of official data on school violence has sparked an increase in empirical research on this phenomenon, which includes bullying. This paper illustrates the distortion between administrative data and self-report surveys. Then, it shows the methodological and practical importance of accounting not only for the frequency of violent acts, but also their circumstances and intensities. In fact, the cumulative psychological and social weight of microviolence (or minor victimizations) is high. This should be taken into account when evaluating policies and programs. The victimization survey can be of significant methodological assistance in performing such evaluations.
