A Textbook Case for Archive Departments, When Mediation and Digital Devices Enable Remote Access to a Document

For the cultural institutions that preserve documentary heritage, digitization raises important challenges in terms of the description, the circulation, and the appropriation of these resources. Mediatizing digital documents implies in particular the creation of ecosystems of knowledge that are simple to use and that correspond to the practices of the various targeted users. The article that follows concentrates on a detailed analysis of a program of digital valuation of iconographic documents, as led by the Municipal Archives of Bordeaux. This example shows how much the logics of documentary organization of professionals influence the creation of the digital device and finally enable documents to be remotely accessed, which is nevertheless at the center of the missions of preservation and distribution of archives.
