Cultural industries and territorial identities. Cultural clusters as spaces of tensions between economic action and distinctive gains

Since the 2000s, in a dynamic of spatial polarization of economic activities, clusters of cultural enterprises have developed in French local territories. These clusters appear to be in a state of tension between their objectives with regard to the economic qualification of cultural actors and the exploitation of their added value, both material and symbolic, with regard to institutional objectives for enhancing the local territory. Thanks to three ideal-typical models, these tensions and the representations of the actors involved in a cultural cluster project can be characterized. By observing eight French musical clusters, we show that these abstractions can also help to identify moments of rupture in the conduct of these localized clusters.
