Teenage scarifications are forms of symbolic opposition to a suffering that dominates some subjects’ lives. They are paradoxical remedies that enable the individual to escape distress. Of course, it is sometimes necessary to repeat the “remedy” as long as circumstances giving rise to suffering continue. They are a way to stem the tide of suffering.
