The author of this paper is a special needs teacher. For the last several years, she has been involved in Activités Associant l’Animal (AAA – Activities Involving Animals) at the Institut d’Education Sensorielle (IDES – Institute for Sensorial Education), which treats young people between the ages of 3 and 20 who are blind. Two-thirds of them suffer from psychological or psychiatric disorders. Dogs selected by the Handi’chiens (formerly ANECAH) are part of the children’s everyday lives and their presence has had significant positive impacts on the children’s behavior. Based on two examples, this paper argues that the dog is a “tool” for learning and awakening in the child.
