The PMI is a tool with broad applicability. It plays a key role in supporting the parenting process and in monitoring children. The recent laws on the protection of childhood and the prevention of delinquency have a negative impact on this tool: reporting takes precedence over prevention, professional secrecy is threatened by the requirement to inform the municipal authorities in which families receiving treatment reside, the biological causality of psychic disorders is embraced unquestioningly, and more. In order to resist this repressive trend and the stigmatization it fosters, professionals working in the area of perinatology have to revise the way treatments are coordinated and to continue offering families support that does not condescend to control and injustice.
