Nobody Knows how Daddies Are Made

Throughout his teaching J. Lacan picked up on the question put forward by Freud, « What is a father ? », enriching it with new references but ensuring the questioning he left as his heritage remained open. Admittedly this question is the one a child asks himself, but also reiterates the paternal problematics unveiled on the analyst’s couch. Whether it be through song, « Papaoutai » (Daddy, where are you ?), literature ( Flac by S. André), theatre ( Little Eyolf by H. Ibsen), or cinema ( Like Father, Like Son by Kore-Eda Hirokazu), artists, preceding the psychoanalyst, remind us that we are not born a father, we become one (or not), but that confronting the signifier of paternity can also cause the damage that clinicians know well.
