The Clinical Approach to Limb Malformations and Prosthetic Devices: Concerning the Case of a Decision to Amputate a Young Girl’s Foot

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2017. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In this article we are interested in the relationship between a mother and her daughter, now aged 10, who has been followed since her birth for a severe leg malformation at the Reference Centre for Rare Diseases of Limb Malformations. This pathology has consequences for the autonomy and quality of life of the subject, albeit without affecting the sphere of the vital organs or of what is curable. Her surgical treatment, namely, the amputation of the malformed foot in order to optimize the fitting of a prosthetic device and facilitate physiological walking, was the subject of a complex parental decision with irreversible effects concerning the child’s body. Our clinical/theoretical inquiry is related to the psychic and intercultural issues raised by this decision involving several actors: child, family, and multi-professional team of carers. The role of the psychologist in this dynamic will also be considered.
