Imprisonment is an “emergence”, a sudden break, taking the subject and his/her entourage unprepared, at the most archaic and intimate levels of their being, in the unspeakable aspects separation and loss. Although a mother is detained, her baby is not. The purpose of this article is to tell the singular story of these mother-baby dyads with a frequently chaotic life course and their complex interactions with the prison environment – at the women’s prison of Les Baumettes in Marseille.
