The author, a speech therapist, reflects on her observations and reflections concerning laughter as it appears in the session. Whether it is the patient’s (child, adolescent or adult), the parents’ or the carer’s laughter, its implications and consequences for the therapeutic relationship are variable. The author seeks to establish a sort of typology of this unique phenomenon that is laughter with reference to clinical situations that she has experienced.
