There is an abundance of children’s literature. It awakens the imagination and nourishes the dreams of children. This article shows, through a few selected examples, how the theme of dreams is treated in children’s literature. From the elucidation of the concept of the dream to the evocation of an imaginary world offering the child an escape from reality, authors of children’s literature make use in their texts or illustrations of poetry that cleverly mixes dream and reality. By approaching the dream as an expression of desire or hope, children’s literature can also bring to life aspirations that may have seemed unimaginable to children. Similarly, by immersing readers in fantasy or wonder, children’s authors contribute to the development of the reader’s imagination. Children’s literature thus plays a role in the psychological construction of the child at the level of elaborating mental images and thus in his or her creative capacity.
