Post-traumatic stress disorder in children, somatization and somatic comorbidities

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2023. Sujet(s) : Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This article examines the impact of psychotrauma on children’s physical health through a longitudinal study carried out by the team at the Pediatric Psychotrauma Center at Lenval Hospital in Nice. Since the ram-truck attack on the Promenade des Anglais on July 14, 2016, the team has seen 1,500 children and carried out nearly 4,000 consultations. In addition to the clinical and therapeutic work, a longitudinal cohort study was set up, including 730 children and their parents, followed for a period of two years, then every five years until the age of 25. The study highlights the impact of psychotrauma on the physical health, social relationships, quality of life, emotional expression and mental health of children and their parents. The results show a correlation between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and various somatic diseases such as asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, chronic pain, sleep disorders, frequent headaches and dermatological problems. The underlying mechanisms of this association remain controversial, but it is essential to assess and take into account physical manifestations in children with PTSD in order to provide them with integrated and comprehensive care. This article highlights the importance of never neglecting the silent consequences of trauma on the body and psyche.
