Between Urban Way of Life and Public Order: An Ecology of the Use of Plazas in Caracas, Venezuela

Observation of the urban conditions of public activities in terms of space and civil activities in terms those engaged in these activities can serve to identify the basic forms of urban living. In this way the socio-spatial stakes are rendered intelligible without however manipulating the conflictual correlatives. A comparative ethnography of the uses of the Plaza Caracas and the Plaza Bolivar illustrates interactions in Caracas between places and bonds. From metropolitan to community, it remains a question of levels, of crossings and anchorages, of idleness and religious proselytism, of “ordinary” and “programmed” sociabilities. Public order emerges as a total sociological object thanks to the cognitive approaches of an ecology of use.
