Instead of analyzing the stance of junior high school students as adherence or rejection of school norms, the one-year investigation in four junior high schools has found that students resist school and teacher influence. This resistance is stronger, since criticism is less legitimate, in junior high schools. Therefore resistance in teacher-student relationships should be taken for granted rather than as a deviance to redress.
