Wheat in the Paris Region on the Edge of a Profound Change: Toward a Spatial Organization of Risk

Agriculture in the Île de France Region, already threatened at many points by its proximity to urban areas, now faces growing and specific risks particularly with regard to atmospheric pollution (heavy metals, ozone, etc). The new European regulations on mycotoxins have increased the anti-pollution requirements with regard to cereals. The partitioning of agricultural space in terms of different product destinations has been tested as a hypothetic tool to manage these risks. Three case studies in the Île de France Region have been compared using a combination of social and bio-technical sciences. This work shows that the question of managing risks is more complex than had initially been imagined: each case study leads to a specific definition of risks and excludes others, gives a priori definitions of a “safe space”, or does not consider the local wheat distribution arrangements as important, or depends upon the different coordination practices of different actors and includes variations in terms of the definition of the wheat itself.
