This article is based upon the analysis of interviews conducted in 2008 with François Lautier then in his final year of teaching in the Paris-La Villette École nationale supérieure d’architecture. It spans his whole career from the end of the 1960’s as a sociology teacher within this establishment. Driven by a refusal to to work within conventional disciplinary frameworks and a desire to establish a fresh and unfetterd link between social sciences and architecture both in teaching and in research, his account gives evidence of and witnesses to the relationships and transformations between the different disciplines as they progressively were constructed during the course of this individual career. In this regard, the necessarily subjective vision of François Lautier draws attention to a position, today a minority condition, which took shape against the grain of established disciplinary patterns.
