Home education as a worldwide phenomenon

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2021. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : The subject is the current growth of home schooling, the practice of which, though still marginal, is spreading in most countries which have a mass-market school system. This quantitative expansion in many industrialized countries can be increasingly seen as a global phenomenon that calls for a global explanation. The literature identifies the types of families who are home-schooling, but little attention is paid to this phenomenon outside of North America, and even less to the global nature of its expansion. The article draws on surveys in Belgium and the United States to describe the self-organization of home schooling and to try to explain its growth. It highlights the mutually reinforcing relationship between expansion and self-organization. Situating this phenomenon in a broader sociological perspective is likely to help us better understand its global character and suggest avenues for research.
