La Bourboule is a pleasant little town with a population of 2 000, located in the Massif du Sancy in the centre of France. It is hard to believe that 150 years ago it did not exist, neither physically nor administratively. How did a hamlet of only a few souls become a community and fully-fledged town, endowed with all the facilities of an urban area? The answer to this question lies in a natural phenomenon, hot springs, but above all in the capitalist company that exploited them. Through its actions, and despite tensions with other players, La Bourboule experienced a booming tourist trade and acquired all the trappings of an urban centre, hence its nickname: the “company town ”.
