Religious influence and the challenge of objectivity in teaching about emotional life and sexuality in the Republic of Ireland

In the Republic of Ireland, the fact that a majority of schools are still run by denominational bodies, mainly the Catholic Church, has, in recent years, become a subject of political and public debate around issues of equality and objectivity in education. These debates mainly concern educating students about emotional life and sexuality, which has been compulsory in primary and secondary schools since 1997 and the methods and content of which have been contested ever since, as elsewhere in the world for diverse reasons. In a field as personal and complex as sexuality and which has repercussions throughout society, the notion of objectivity challenges the very foundations of the country’s education system and the place of religion within it.
