Transmitting family religious heritages: the case of students at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2024. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : This Article looks at the issue of the transmission of family religious heritage among male and female undergraduate students at the University of Paris 8 Vincennes-Saint-Denis. Based on a questionnaire and interviews carried out in 2014-2015 among 2,545 students from 14 different disciplines, the author examines the way in which different religious beliefs, as well as non-religious belief, are passed on – or not – from parents to children. The study shows that, while Islam and non-religious belief are passed on particularly well, this is not the case for Catholicism, which, as is the case nationally, is experiencing a serious reproduction crisis, while Protestantism and Buddhism, because of the specific nature of their religious offer, which is aimed at very different segments of the population, are benefiting from a significant influx of followers from other denominations.
