Literature tends to depict a specific prison’s image whereas different types of French penal institution exist and various experiences seem to be linked with them. Considering the significance of the relation to space in the individual development, we interviewed prisoners both in a remand center and in a detention center about their actual experience of incarceration and prison space. Through their relation to their daily life space, we observe two different imprisonment experiences related to the type of prison we consider. Inmates in the remand center suffer from over-closeness and its consequences in term of loss of privacy and fear of infection. The relation to space in detention center shows the subjects’ regaining control on their daily environment. Consequently, we take into consideration the existence of several of experienced imprisonment.
