Social space, while physical as much as it is symbolic, is determined by the dynamic of systems of relation of a considered group. Applied to the field of alimentary studies, it refers to social relationships with food across representations and practices which are temporally situated. Because of the particularly normative character of alimentation and its relation to intimacy, direct observation constitutes a privileged methodology, revealing relations to alimentary social space that are otherwise invisible. Beyond the inherent limits of this methodology, we are interested in its recourse in “localized” space, and the impact of the phenomenon of globalization on the spatial parameters of research.
