Socio-spatial organisation, a commons for territorial development: The case study of a community in Brazil

The theory of commons, which emerged in a context of environmental concern, has been mobilised more recently to reinterpret territorial development issues and propose alternative models of resource management. We analyse what is ‘common’ in a socio-spatial organization (SSO) in order to understand how it contributes to territorial development. Our study focuses on a community of traditional peasants in southern Brazil. We have analysed three concrete socio-spatial objects at three organizational levels. By associating the theories of commons and territorial development, we show how sso becomes a ‘commons’ for territorial development.
