“Ample Transmigration”: George Chapman, English Translator of Homer

Par : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2007. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : Early modern English translators such as John Florio or George Chapman nearly always justified their work in the paratext of their translations. The justification was all the more necessary for Chapman as his source material was Homer’s epics, archetypal texts written originally in Greek by an archetypal poet, translated by Chapman in a vernacular language. Chapman’s translation and its paratext can be seen as the perfect test-case for the creation of a national literature and the emancipation of the English language and literature from their Classical sources.
