This introduction seeks to outline the recent reorientation—one should rather speak of a “disorientation”—of gender studies. A reminder of the crucial breakthroughs of poststructuralist French theory is followed by an evocation of the major contribution of contemporary American thought on such issues, and of “queer” studies in particular.
