This is the edited transcript of an interview with Ian McEwan which was conducted on 22 May 2018 at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in front of an audience of students. The editor selected the parts of the conversation which concentrated on Ian McEwan’s 2001 novel Atonement and its 2007 film adaptation by Joe Wright. Ian McEwan kindly and meticulously revised the final written transcript of this interview.
