French debates around the Islamic veil and the burqa rested on the desire to give “meaning” to the veil, as a symbol of oppression or a claim for identity. However, the opposition between acceptance and resistance cannot encompass the multiple meanings of religious symbols. And the fight for equal rights can sometimes lead to the exclusion of the religious sphere from public debate, through anthropological rather than political arguments.
