Psychologists have studied the relationship of the child with his/her space, anthropologists much less so. And yet, focusing attention on a child’s space and surroundings can help to measure the significance of those who, in succession, have helped him/her to “grow.” We are in the Pyrenees with a young city-dweller (the author) who was surrounded by mountains summer after summer from a young age (eight or nine) until the end of his adolescence. In the company of his brothers and sisters, he became more daring, starting with the hills bordering his family summer home, until he tackled the summits of the “high mountain.” Although he climbed it, this did not come without fear and apprehension. Geography: a space for initiation.
