Inquiry into a disappearance: Selvatico, wild boar, hunters and their wives (Tuscany)
Type de matériel :
29
As in other parts of Western Europe, hunters in the village of M. in Tuscany (Italy) have long thought that certain animals carried a substance called selvatico (literally “wild”), which made their meat inedible. Nowadays however, they question its existence and believe that it no longer exists. This article aims to explain the reasons for its disappearance. Indeed, the selvatico is not only a substance: it is a network linking men, women, wild boars and space. The profound social and ecological changes that occurred in Tuscany during the 20th century modified the relationship with nature, wild boar and hunting, leading to the disappearance of selvatico.
