Examining Durkheim’s pedagogical influence on his students by analyzing books borrowed from the University of Bordeaux’s humanities and social sciences library (1889–1902)

Par : Contributeur(s) : Type de matériel : TexteTexteLangue : français Détails de publication : 2020. Ressources en ligne : Abrégé : In this article, we propose to implement an original methodology aimed at identifying the influences of Durkheim on his students between 1887 and 1902 in Bordeaux. The corpus is made up of the register of books borrowed both by the professor and his students since 1889. 79 students (out of 150 administratively identified) made 3 000 borrowings over the period. Analysis of the student library (subdivided into Agregation and Licence students) shows that the teacher’s influence was quite weak in social science and religious science. With the exception of Spencer, no “sociologist” has circulated between the teacher and his students, for reasons discussed in the article. Its philosophical mark, shared with the other teachers, is predominant. It has been established that his personal mark was mainly in psychology, which is unexpected.A second part of the article presents the comparative influences of the professors of philosophy (Hamelin, Espinas, Rodier and Durkheim) on their common students, which is another method to bring out the singularity of the Durkheimian bibliographic mark. This method laid the groundwork for other monographies that will be able to specify the influence of each of Durhheim’s colleagues.
