How does gender organize the historiographical field? To answer this question, this paper examines the career path of French historian Adeline Daumard (1924–2003) between 1940 and 1980. The study of her biography and her intellectual exchanges with Brazil reveals how the masculine image shapes the representation of history and of professional success. In light of the historical singularities of higher education institutions in Brazil and France, this paper also investigates the way the geopolitical position redefines gender positions, and it exposes the hierarchical levels that shape the profiles of professional historians.
