What were Jean Monnet’s plans for unity? Academic research on Monnet initially focused on the Schuman Plan, forgetting that Monnet had formulated projects for European, Atlantic, and global unity as early as the period of the League of Nations. From 1919, he wanted to encourage peaceful global cooperation through the League of Nations. In 1943, the theme of European unity was linked to the foreign policy of Charles de Gaulle, who, unlike Monnet, adopted a policy of force against Germany. It was not until May 9, 1950, that this policy officially ceased. The European obsession was no longer central to the still vague projects of the Union of Men or the Universal Union. Jean Monnet always sought peace, but he succeeded in creating the European Union.
