In 2018, the French law on the modernization of the health care system (loi de modernisation du système de santé) created the advanced practice nurse (infirmier en pratique avancée, IPA), a new position between doctors and nurses. This article looks at the socially differentiated approaches of certain nurses to this diploma, on the one hand, choosing to go back to university for two years in order to get the IPA master’s degree, and, on the other, making use of this new diploma in their everyday work. It shows that while, objectively, getting the IPA degree corresponds to “in situ,” “horizontal,” or “discrete” mobility, subjectively it can be understood quite differently by some nurses: as a “vertical mobility” and a gateway to a new profession.
