Women in competitive sports at university: Prospects with strings attached
Type de matériel :
74
Female university students involved in sports represent an atypical profile among young women. Some enroll in the university program STAPS (Science and technology of physical sports activities), which is linked to sports professions, while others combine high-level sports practice with other university courses. For all these women sports is a defining element of their studies, balancing conformity and distinctiveness, yet always conditional. Between inheritance and the opening of new possibilities, between parental projections and reliance on significant others from the academic or sports world, these students demonstrate a “quiet disobedience” that contributes to the “respectful revolution” underway at university, and even more so in the realm of sports, which strongly resists women’s entry.
