Who wants little ones in nursery school?

Schooling for two-to-three year olds—“little ones”—has been the subject of numerous legal controversies in recent decades. Each time, teachers, through their unions, have demonstrated their commitment to the schooling of these pupils. However, observation of their work shows that, in practice, they delegate most of the work to subordinate staff, the ATSEMs (Specialized Territorial Agents for Nursery Schools). For these teachers, these “little ones” are seen as “dirty work.” However, for the ATSEMs, this dirty work is only “relative,” as they reclaim the responsibility of caring for these pupils and turn it into a means of professional enhancement.
