The Veiled Object

This surrealist work by Belgian painter René Magritte delineates a veil hiding the faces of a man and a woman. This object is identical for each of them, and it can fall or move. It is a metonymic object closely related to the body. The metaphoric effect makes the body disappear so the phallic signifier can emerge, but the metaphoric-metonymic oscillation brings it back again.
