Man regarded as a “desiring subject” led to some famous analyses that returned a part of the enigma back to sexual difference. Perhaps we are more aware of the ties between desire and repetition, but what about the mechanics of desire that make desire shift toward love? And what kind of love are we then dealing with? This paper shows why these are some questions raised by Alfred Jarry’s novel, Le Surmâle. It also addresses the types of answers we should expect from reading this novel when we stand at the intersection of philosophy and psychoanalysis.
