Freud was not a psychiatrist, but a neurologist. He invented the field of psychoanalysis by departing from contemporary psychiatry and turning to popular medical practices. His search on hysteria, obsessional neurosis, relations of neurosis to transference within the framework of treatment represent an outline of psychoanalytic nosography. He was little concerned with psychosis, which he left in the hands of psychiatrists.
