Freud and then Lacan interpreted the central question of femininity while bumping up against the same point of impasse, that of its efficacy. Freud, we know, circumscribed a woman's destiny well below access to femininity while Lacan proposed a more open reading. The woman does not exist; only women exist, each one of them independently distinct from one another. It is this “becoming woman” that I propose to deploy here.
