This article attempts to combine the fact that maturity occurs late in human beings—a condition known as neoteny—with the groundwork of the death drive, which goes in the same direction and works against both autonomy and the work of intrapsychic separation that can be accomplished thanks to psychoanalysis. In order to counteract the death drive, psychoanalysts must use considerable tact in their technique. In addition, the precision with which they direct the cure is essential. This precision clarifies the meaning of psychoanalysis, particularly with regard to its dissidence.
