This paper analyzes French agricultural modernization policies after World War II as a compromise between the economic selection of farms based on productivity imperatives and the mobilization effort of farmers themselves to ensure their social advancement. These policies were based on a dense network of organizations in large part orchestrated by agricultural advisors. The invention of these new intermediaries dedicated to the modernizing project enhanced the capacities of modernizing elites and ensured their lasting influence on the agricultural sector.
