Colonial history constitutes a blind spot in French historiography. This history, with its vague, largely discredited content, nevertheless produced knowledge which, in some areas, was useful in writing the history of Africa after the colonies became independent. This article examines how this sub-field within the discipline emerged, directly supported by colonial circles. It analyses its laborious establishment within the French University (1880-1930) both from a strictly scientific as well as an institutional standpoint.
