This article examines the genesis of the informal network of Vincent de Gournay, the trade manager, whose editorial, academic and salon action brought political economy to the forefront in France during the 1750s. The “science of trade” network, made up of former merchants, enlightened adminis-trators and men of letters, was an unusual episode in the history of economics and liberalism, transforming the face of the modern state administrator.
