The Silence and the Fury, Pamphleteers and Parliamentary Order at the End of the Second Empire: Reflections on the Case of Henri Rochefort
Type de matériel :
54
Based on the case of Henri Rochefort at the end of the Second Empire, the article studies the relationship between pamphleteers and a parliamentary order still in the process of construction. It brings out the striking contrast between Rochefort’s customary silence inside the parliament and the fury he demonstrated in his published writings. The author puts forward the hypothesis that the dialectic at work between manifesting vehemence outside the Chambre des Députés and self-control inside may have been a way of keeping parliamentary political discussion peaceful.
