The drafting and public reading of funeral orations in honor of members of the French Academy of Sciences serve as analyzers. These texts reveal the qualities expected of the bearers of scientific authority, the grandeur of the scientific “persona,” the charisma of positivistic reason, and even more the representation of a certain hierarchical view of the social order.
