Urban Living Labs (ULLs) are territorial sociotechnical initiatives that aim to encourage the introduction of innovative and user-centric experiments in real-world environments. Through the empirical analysis of two experimental urban projects backed by two European ULLs (“Lisière d’une Tierce Forêt” supported by the ULL Paris&Co in Paris and “The Circular Kitchen” supported by the AMS Institute in Amsterdam), it is possible to explore ULLs’ intermediation roles in terms of operations and their ecosystem. Equally, it provides insight into how they combine as part of the innovation support policies driven by European urban centers.Using semi-structured interviews conducted in the field with those contributing to the experiments, this qualitative study highlights the resulting solutions’ innovative nature, which is built on the convergence of creativity and local stakeholders’ innovation strategies. First, the study demonstrates that ULLs contribute to the construction of creative collective dynamics that transcend the geographical boundaries of experiments, but cut user-citizens out of the innovation processes. We then analyze how ULLs are put to use as remote tools to implement local entrepreneurial strategies; meanwhile they also help to resolve complex nascent territorial challenges. By highlighting how ULLs progressively amass tangible and intangible resources, the article outlines their contributions toward a specific urban “platformization.”
