The rural and the urban, two categories for exploring the agri-urban: A reciprocal clarification

The agri-urban territories (TAU) constitute a category of public action (designating both certain spaces and the forms of governance that are established there) labeled by the Île-de-France region. From our perspective as sociologists and political scientists interested in landscape issues, we question the experience of these territorial development approaches in light of the concepts of urban and rural. After reviewing the fluctuating meanings of these categories and the debates to which they have given rise in the social sciences, we analyze the markers of the urban and the rural implemented and staged by the TAUs and the way in which the urban-rural relationship is activated. The very construction of the term “agri-urban” testifies to the erasure of references to the rural in favor of a focus on the agricultural, reintegrated as a constitutive dimension of a certain urbanity and highlighting a territorial construction that claims its specificity.
