Starting from a conception of professions that brings together functionalist and interactionist approaches, this article seeks to define the social status and the role of messengers in charge of transporting highly confidential government correspondence, in a state where secrets are a key principle of its mode of government. It follows the evolution of the messenger services in the Soviet Union from the 1920s to the 1960s by observing the impact of this evolution on state secrets.
