Immigrant workers were deeply involved in strikes in the French automotive sector in the early 1980s, especially at Citroën and Talbot. They demanded respect of Muslim religious practices, a claim that would join a list of other labor union demands. Progressively a new interpretation of the conflicts circulated between the fields of industrialists, police, media, and politics, which placed Islam (then Islamism) as the essential key to understanding these labor disputes to the exclusion of other claims.
